North Carolina does luxury a little differently.
Here, it might mean taking over a mountain resort for an entire weekend. A candlelit dinner on the terrace of a historic estate. A five-star hotel surrounded by trees. A ferry carrying everyone you love to an island where they'll stay until Sunday.
The best luxury wedding venues in North Carolina aren't simply beautiful places to hold a ceremony. They're places that shape the experience around it.
After more than a decade photographing weddings across our home state, we've become particularly drawn to properties with a strong sense of place, exceptional hospitality, beautiful light, and enough depth to create photographs that couldn't have been made anywhere else.
This is our highly edited list.
Not every beautiful North Carolina wedding venue is here. That's intentional.
These are the places we'd consider first for couples planning an elevated celebration in North Carolina, whether that means an intimate dinner for fifty or an entire weekend with everyone they love.

What Makes a Wedding Venue Feel Truly Luxurious?

Luxury isn't a chandelier count.
And it definitely isn't whatever price bracket a wedding directory happens to assign a property.
For us, the best luxury wedding venues combine place, hospitality, experience, and possibility.
We look for properties where guests are cared for exceptionally well. Where the food is part of the experience. Where the architecture or landscape gives the celebration a real sense of place. Where there are beautiful options if it rains. Where a planner and creative team have enough freedom to make the wedding feel personal.
And increasingly, we look for places where the wedding can become a weekend.
At High Hampton, couples can reserve the full 1,400-acre property for a wedding celebration. Old Edwards offers accommodations, dining, spa experiences and multiple venues throughout Highlands. Biltmore can move celebrations through multiple settings across the estate. The Umstead combines a luxury hotel experience with lakefront and ballroom wedding spaces just outside Raleigh.
Those things matter photographically, too.
When everyone stays awhile, people settle in. Parents linger over breakfast. Friends reconnect at the welcome party. Guests stop behaving like wedding guests and start behaving like themselves.
That's usually when the photographs get really good.

A few favorites
North Carolina's mountains are home to some of the state's most extraordinary wedding destinations. Highlands, Cashiers, Asheville, Lake Toxaway, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains offer something that's difficult to recreate elsewhere: exceptional hospitality set against a landscape that immediately changes the pace of a weekend.
These are places where we'd encourage guests to arrive early. Check into the inn. Have dinner together Thursday night. Spend Friday hiking, golfing, sitting by the lake, or wandering into town before meeting again for the welcome party. By the time the wedding begins, everyone has already settled into being together.
As photographers, we love what that does to the photographs. The story becomes bigger than a single day.

With thoughtful planning and design, a Biltmore wedding can feel deeply personal even against such an iconic backdrop.

From a photography perspective, we love how much life can happen naturally here, from mornings by the lake to cocktails on the lawn.

Old Edwards Inn is one of our favorite places for a true destination wedding in North Carolina. Guests can stay throughout Highlands, walk into town, spend an afternoon at the spa, and gather across several beautiful spaces throughout the weekend. We especially love the gardens, stone architecture, and variety of settings, which give us plenty to work with photographically without ever needing to pull couples far from the celebration.

Set within an 800-acre mountain valley in Cashiers, Lonesome Valley offers one of the most dramatic natural settings in Western North Carolina, with weddings centered around the property's canyon views and acclaimed Canyon Kitchen. North Carolina's luxury wedding landscape isn't limited to the mountains. In Charlotte and the Sandhills, historic properties and destination resorts offer a different kind of weekend, with easier access for guests and plenty to do beyond the wedding itself.

For couples with a connection to golf, Pinehurst is more than a wedding venue. The historic resort gives guests an entire destination to experience, with multiple hotels, golf courses, dining, spa experiences, and event spaces throughout the property. A wedding weekend can move naturally from golf outings and welcome drinks to the ceremony, reception, and farewell brunch without everyone constantly leaving the resort. We especially like Pinehurst when the place itself already means something to the couple or their families.

Tucked into Charlotte's Myers Park neighborhood, Duke Mansion feels surprisingly removed from the city, with 4.5 acres of gardens and just 20 guest rooms. Weddings include exclusive use of the mansion on the wedding evening and all 20 rooms, and the property limits itself to 25 weddings each year. We love that scale. It creates the feeling of gathering everyone at a beautiful private home while still having the hospitality and culinary team of an established property behind you.

We live and work in the Triangle, so we're especially opinionated here. There are many beautiful wedding venues across Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, but for this particular list we're narrowing the field to properties that pair the setting with a genuinely elevated hospitality experience.

The Umstead is our pick for couples who want a true luxury hotel wedding without leaving the Triangle. Set on a private lake surrounded by woods, the property combines guest accommodations, spa experiences, acclaimed dining, and indoor and outdoor wedding spaces in one place. We particularly love the transition from the lawn and lake during daylight into a beautifully designed ballroom for dinner and dancing. It's polished and convenient without feeling like a generic city hotel.

Just outside Chapel Hill, Fearrington Village feels like a countryside escape while remaining incredibly accessible to Raleigh, Durham, and the rest of the Triangle. The gardens, inn, restaurants, shops, and winding paths allow guests to settle into the property for the weekend instead of simply arriving for the ceremony. As photographers, we love how much variety exists within a very small footprint, from quiet garden portraits to documentary photographs of guests wandering between dinner, drinks, and the barn.

Luxury looks a little different on the North Carolina coast. Rather than grand resorts at every turn, the best celebrations tend to embrace the landscape itself: oceanfront clubs, island houses, thoughtful tenting, and weekends where being by the water is the entire point.

Set between the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound, The Sanderling is one of the few coastal North Carolina properties that gives us the full resort experience we're looking for on this list. Guests can stay in rooms, suites, or private residences and spend the weekend between the beach, pools, spa, restaurants, and Outer Banks activities. Following a major renovation, the resort also has refreshed event spaces overlooking both the ocean and sound. Photographing sunrise on one side of the property and sunset on the other is a pretty compelling coastal argument.

A Bald Head Island wedding begins before the ceremony, because simply getting there changes the pace. Guests arrive by ferry, trade cars for golf carts, settle into island homes, and spend the weekend moving between the beach, clubs, chapel, and gatherings around the island. The Shoals Club offers oceanfront ceremony and reception spaces overlooking Cape Fear, while the Bald Head Island Club provides additional options for dinners and celebrations. We love it for couples who want the wedding to feel like a true getaway without leaving North Carolina.

Dreaming of something more private?
Some of the most extraordinary coastal weddings in North Carolina don't happen at traditional wedding venues at all. A private oceanfront home or estate paired with an experienced planner, beautiful tenting, exceptional food, and thoughtful design can create an entirely bespoke weekend on the coast. For couples who value privacy and creative freedom, we'd often explore that route before choosing a venue simply because it has a wedding package.

How We'd Choose Between Them
Why we love photographing wedding weekends in nc
The most memorable wedding photographs rarely happen during the ceremony.
They happen over coffee the morning after. During a quiet walk through the gardens before guests arrive. Around a long dinner table on Friday night when everyone is still catching up. On a dock just before sunset, when the schedule finally gives way to conversation.
That's one of the reasons we're drawn to destination celebrations and wedding weekends. These venues invite people to linger, and the photographs become richer because of it.
Rather than documenting a single day, we're able to tell the story of a place, a gathering, and the relationships that made it meaningful.
