How do you choose what to wear to a session that is supposed to represent you and your loved one and the time in your life before you’re married? We put together these helpful tips so that you can easily plan for an engagement session that feels like you now and will feel timeless!
We have received a lot of questions recently about how to dress for the perfect engagement session, or even just for anniversary sessions that our couples want to be a little dressier. We decided to write this post so that if you are planning a session soon, you can see some of our recommendations and hear about why we love photographing engagement sessions where couples put thought into their dress. Here are three tips for what to wear during an engagement session. We even included a Pinterest board of wardrobe ideas to help you prepare for your session!
For the ladies
For many brides, what isn’t always obvious when you get engaged is how much work it is. That’s why we love engagement sessions. It’s a time to unwind with your loved one and just be. We recommend getting a little dressed up for your engagement session, even if for just one look, because this is a special occasion! (And, for the record, we totally support a small shopping spree — but keep it sustainable and consider renting your look!)
You’re only engaged once, and it’s nice to have a time to make your engagement session a date night — one where you feel beautiful and are spending time with the love of your life on the journey to your wedding day. We’ll help make sure that you are making some meaningful memories along the way!
One of the most important things we like capturing during an engagement session is movement. We never want to “pose” you into static positions that you have to hold for minutes at a time. For this reason, we recommend that you wear something that moves beautifully paired with accessories that feel like you. Most often, this looks like dresses or skirts made of gorgeous, flowing materials matched with complimentary shoes or jewelry. We love how much movement this type of clothing choice brings into photos and especially appreciate that our clients feel extra beautiful in them. One quick tip: if it’s something you would wear to an interview or could count as a “business” outfit, leave it behind!
Here’s the thing, though. If you’re not a dress person or you feel more comfortable in something else, that’s totally fine! Some of our favorite couples have worn killer jumpsuits to their sessions! Have you checked out our post on what to wear for a lifestyle session? That post has tons of great ideas for clothing ideas as well, and might make you feel more comfortable. They’re also great options to bring as a second, more casual look for your engagement session.
Don’t be afraid to go bold with your choice of clothing — but keep it balanced! If you’re choosing a fun print or bright color, go with a more classic silhouette. Don’t forget to think about WHERE your session will be. If outdoors in NC during spring or summer, consider wearing something other than green!
Not really a bright colors person? Calm, timeless neutrals are always a win in our books! They’ll allow your love for each other to be the center of attention!
For the gentlemen – from Ian
To be totally frank, the first few times around I never really loved photo shoots. Sure, they’ve grown on me over the years, but early on, each Christmas card my mom made my brothers and me pose for, and each session Radhika booked for us, just felt like too much. But what I’ve come to realize is that these things are important. One year, looking back on the photos we took that year, we realized that there were really only two images that had been taken of the two of us. It hit me that documenting our time together was, and is, important. My mom and Radhika had taken it upon themselves, despite my mild grumbling, to make sure we were creating lasting tokens of our lives together. Photo sessions started to take on a new meaning — someone had gone through the trouble of making them happen, so the least I could do was show up with a good attitude and an even better outfit.
Trust me when I say that when it comes to an engagement session, the ladies are not the only ones who should be dressing up or bringing accessories. As guys, this is our time to shine. Most of the grooms we work with end up feeling excited to throw on a blazer or tie to truly make the time together, and the photos that come out of it, memorable. Dressing up can be tricky — it’s hard to pinpoint the right level of fanciness. Just remember, when it comes to having photos taken of you and your significant other, it’s really hard to overdress. To give you an idea of what I mean, I’ve put together the Pinterest board below full of choices that are both dapper and classic and show that what might initially seem like overdressing will actually create the kind of lasting, classic look that the two of you are excited to look back on for years to come. Besides, is it ever a bad thing to take the breath away of your loved one? This engagement session is just a preview of what she’ll be walking down the aisle towards, so make it count!
Some quick tips for the gentlemen? Wear that tie or bring that blazer, but leave the shirts with logos or baseball hats at home. Make sure you end up with photos that you couldn’t just get on your iPhone! If you’re more of a casual person, we totally get it. Check out this post for some ideas as well!
