In early April towards the end of our second trimester, we planned a weekend away, just the two of us, to take some time away and celebrate our baby.
The second trimester, for the most part, went fairly smoothly. Aside from that one little food poisoning incident when I couldn’t keep down anything and baby and I became really dehydrated and had to go to the hospital (!), a lot of the symptoms of the first trimester faded away. I had a ton more energy and was able to knock out some more projects, like getting our nursery ready! One of the most exciting things that happened during this trimester? Feeling the baby kick! Around week 18, I started feeling little butterfly movements and shortly after, Ian was able to feel the baby as well. One day, when Ian hugged me after arriving home from work, the baby kicked HIS belly! 🙂
However, I really want to be real about pregnancy. As glamorous and glowy as mamas look in their maternity photos, it doesn’t always feel like that. The second trimester for me came with a growing baby that caused joint shifts and a lot of pain. If you’re going through this too, then I’ve got lots of suggestions and resources for you in my maternity round-up post. There are lots of ups and downs during this time, and not everything is beautiful and perfect. Enter: the babymoon.
When I pictured our babymoon, I pictured somewhere warm with lots of time to relax. I know what you’re thinking: in early April? We headed to The Tides Inn in the northern neck region of Virginia and planned the trip to coincide with our maternity session with one of our favorite photographer duos, Michael & Carina. We started our trip out in Greensboro, dropping off Iris with Ian’s mom, grabbing lunch at our favorite hot dog place, and then heading north from there. The weather was beautiful when we started out, and when we arrived at the Tides Inn, we got to eat dinner outside on the bay while a live band played.
Unfortunately, that was the last of the nice weather that we saw while at The Tides Inn! The next day was rainy and cold and it snowed a little, too! Looking back, I think this was a blessing in disguise. The Tides Inn normally has lots of different activities you can do, but many were canceled because of the weather. Instead, we were actually forced to relax, even if it was inside. We had appointments at the spa, walked around some antique stores in town, and played Battleship by fire in their sitting area. The most fun memory, though? Getting to snuggle in bed while watching a ton of HGTV! We had never seen Fixer Upper or Property Brothers before and, in this crazy season of hustle, it was so nice to be forced to stop and just relax. We might have a few too many ideas of what we want to do to our house now, but it was fun to actually see what the rest of the country has been obsessing over!
On Sunday, we had beautiful weather again — so lucky, because we had our session with Michael & Carina! We met them in Powhatan at The Foundry and were lucky to get an evening with stunning sunset light and blooming flowers! I guess early April isn’t the worst time for a babymoon after all! You can see some of our favorites below.
One of the most special things we did before the session was write vows to our baby. We know our relationship with our child is as important as the one we have with each other and we want to be intentional about the values with which we raise it. In preparation, we thought a lot about what we wanted for the life we create for our family and each individually wrote vows to our baby. You can see them below, calligraphed by me!
