Intimate Rose Garden Wedding at Parents’ Home | Durham, NC

Kathryn and Tony’s intimate rose garden wedding was our first of the year and one we won’t soon forget!

When we stepped into the backyard of Kathryn’s childhood home in Durham, NC, we knew exactly why she and Tony wanted to have their wedding there. The space had been transformed for an intimate rose garden wedding fit for the two of them and their closest family and friends. Tables were set with their private collection of cobalt and white pottery, and flowers were everywhere. The weather was lovely on this beautiful spring morning, and the perfect stage was set for their sweet ceremony.

We loved how relaxed Tony and Kathryn obviously felt, but this wedding certainly wasn’t lacking meaning. One of our favorite moments was the toasts, where the beautiful words of family and friends brought Tony to tears! This wedding definitely showed that a small celebration with family and friends can be just as touching and lovely as a large soiree. But not to fear! Tony and Kathryn will have a reception in the fall where they get to celebrate with more of their friends, and we can’t wait!

We asked Kathryn and Tony a few questions about their wedding day and thought their reflections were beautiful, so wanted to share them with all of you:

What was special about having your wedding at Kathryn’s parents’ home?

Aside from it being the home where Kathryn was born and raised — we all just really loved the outdoor space for a backyard wedding. And we, of course, wanted to build upon those forever memories.

How did you feel on your wedding day?

Surprisingly calm! But also, it kind of felt like Christmas morning… and maybe that’s because we had an 11AM ceremony, haha. But I think we both woke up so excited that our nerves just melted all away.

How would you describe the “vibe” or feeling you were going for in planning your wedding ceremony and reception?

We were definitely aiming for a more romantic vibe and our florist, Stacey Burkert of Fig Tree Designs, totally delivered! It was a stunning display of soft pinks, yellows, and whites — and it was beautifully fragrant (just like the backyard normally is, but amplified!). Everything was arranged in both Kathryn and her moms’ collection of old blue and white vases.

Was there a certain moment during the ceremony that you always want to remember?  How did you feel?

The moment we first locked eyes was the absolute sweetest. It truly felt like there was no one else around.

What was your favorite moment during your wedding day?

The unexpected/off the cuff toasts from our family and friends were both incredible and incredibly moving to us.

What was the best surprise about your wedding?  Something you didn’t expect?

Definitely getting into the pool at the very end… We truly thought a guest might go for it before we ever did! But that kind of spontaneity is something we both bond over and it’s a memory we’ll never forget.

What have your guests told you they loved about your wedding day?

Our guests really enjoyed the “minimony” ceremony concept. Despite being broadcast to loved ones far and wide over zoom, it felt super intimate with just our immediate family and the bridal party in attendance.
