Radhika and I have been really inspired this past year to have more fun in our work, so I was really excited to join Wendy Laurel for a beach couples lifestyle session on the beach during Photo Native featuring the experimental techniques she’s been using in her own work.
We caravanned to Goleta Beach in Santa Barbara with instructions to all meet up at the orange VW Microbus. Wendy was joined by Tim from Kodak, who passed out rolls of Portra, Ektar, and even Kodachrome to use in the session. To start, Wendy gave us an overview of her favorite techniques and shooting preferences. Highlights include:
- Ektar: Wow the colors! They are especially noticeable in the bright, beachtastic blues and pinks. After trying it I’m in love.
- Double Exposures: A favorite of Radhika’s, but after trying them here I’m on board.
- Slow Exposures: Not something I’ve really tried, but I see the appeal now.
- Light leaks: Very cool but a little scary. Will need to keep trying with this one.
During the workshop we photographed two couples. Cadence and Bradley were really fun to work with and told a kind of surfing road-trip story. Highlights include the surfboards, the van, and daisies. They clearly have a lot of chemistry but also added their own bit of whimsy to whatever situation we put them in. Dom and Stephanie also have a lot of love between them, but they told more of an intimate beach afternoon story. Their highlights include the rainbow blanket, running up and down the beach, and also the daisies. (Wendy loves daisies.)
I shot seven rolls of film, which at the time of handing them over felt like they might be a total waste of time and money, but that was far from the case. Not only do we have a ton of really cool techniques to start using more and more in our own work, we also have so much creative energy coming out of sessions like these. We’re excited to show you in your own session!
